Named after the New Orleans bartender who first used rye whiskey in the Sazerac Cocktail, this uncut and unfiltered Straight Rye Whiskey is bottled directly from the barrel, just as it was over a century ago. Full of rich flavors, this authentic American rye whiskey is a symbol of the timeless history of New Orleans and the legacy of Thomas H. Handy. Made at our esteemed Buffalo Trace Distillery, Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible named it Rye of the Year and World Whiskey of the Year. Add 12 ounces of rye whiskey, 3/4 cup cold water, and a tablespoon of absinthe.

Paul John Distillery

The Sazerac name itself goes back to France and a family of the same name that started a winery in about 1600. By 1796, the cognac produced here, Sazerac de Forge & Fils, was being exported to New Orleans. Developed by pharmacist Antoine Peychaud, who arrived in New Orleans from Haiti about 1830, it became a key ingredient in what would become the Sazerac cocktail. Our business was rooted in the Cognac business in France, which in turn led to the creation and popularity of coffee houses and bars in New Orleans, the Sazerac Cocktail, and eventually to the Sazerac Company we are today. The company announced in November that part of the bottling for Buffalo Trace’s Sazerac Rye will be moving to New Orleans. While the whiskey will still be distilled at Buffalo Trace for now, the company tells us that soon the 500-gallon still that can be seen on tours will begin to produce whiskey as well. The picturesque Domaine Sazerac de Segonzac is set amongst 220 acres of beautiful, historic, organically cultivated vineyards in the very heart of the Cognac region of France. In this version, the addition of cold water accounts for the slight dilution that would occur from stirring with ice.
